Abdominal ultrasound is an imaging examination performed at the practice using an ultrasound machine. It is painless and is used to study the abdominal organs.

What is an abdominal ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasound is an imaging examination performed at the practice using an ultrasound machine. It is painless and is used to study solid or fluid-filled abdominal organs such as the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, kidneys, spleen and blood vessels. The patient must fast for 6 hours before the examination. There are no contraindications to this examination.

Ultrasound can diagnose:

  • Abnormalities of the gallbladder or bile ducts: stones, cancers
  • Liver abnormalities: cirrhosis, fatty liver (steatosis), cancer
  • Changes in the spleen: enlargement, necrosis
  • Vascular abnormalities: dilations, thrombosis, aneurysm
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity)
  • Thickening of the wall of the stomach, intestine or colon
  • Appendicitis
