Dietary advice and diets

Here you will find the main dietary advice useful in managing digestive disorders. These guides are general and do not replace personalized advice during a consultation.

Dietary advice for constipation

Favor soluble fiber:

  • Cereals: barley, oats
  • Vegetables: zucchini, squash, beetroot, carrot, asparagus, sweet potato, potato (without the skin), green salad
  • Fruit: orange, grapefruit, mango, nectarine, peach, kiwi

Insoluble fiber to limit (especially if you have bloating):

  • Cereals: whole wheat
  • Vegetables: broccoli, peas, cabbage
  • Legumes: chickpeas, broad beans, white beans, lentils
  • Fruit: apples, pears, dried fruit (prunes, figs, dates)

FODMAPs are fermentable sugars (fructose, lactose, fructans, galacto-oligosaccharides and polyols) that can cause bloating and digestive discomfort. Foods to limit:

  • Fructose: apples, pears, melon, canned fruit, packaged juices, honey
  • Lactose: milk (cow, goat), milk-based yogurt, soft cheeses (allowed: Emmental, Gruyère, Comté, Parmesan)
  • Fructans: wheat, rye, barley, artichoke, asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, fennel, leek, onion (in large amounts), persimmon
  • Galacto-oligosaccharides: chickpeas, white and red beans, lentils, broad beans
  • Polyols: avocado, apricot, peach, nectarine, prune, cherries, cauliflower, green pepper, mushroom, peas, sweet corn, sweeteners (aspartame, saccharin), chewing gum and lollipops

The gluten-free diet is based on strictly avoiding gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It is essential in celiac disease. The details and the list of allowed foods will be explained to you during your consultation.

The management of steatohepatitis ("fatty liver") is based on lifestyle and dietary measures: reducing fast sugars and saturated fats, limiting alcohol, regular physical activity and gradual weight loss. A program adapted to your situation will be offered during your consultation.
