Patient describing digestive symptoms to a doctor during a consultation

Recurring heartburn, a bloated stomach, irregular bowel habits… Many digestive problems are harmless, but some signs call for a specialist's opinion. Here is when to see a gastroenterologist in Casablanca, and when you need urgent care.

What does a gastroenterologist do?

A gastroenterologist, or hepato-gastroenterologist, specializes in the whole digestive system: esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon and rectum, as well as the liver, bile ducts, pancreas and anus. They make the diagnosis, prescribe treatment and perform endoscopies such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy themselves.

10 signs that should prompt a consultation

  • Heartburn or reflux lasting several weeks or returning despite treatment
  • Repeated abdominal pain, or pain that wakes you at night
  • Diarrhea or constipation lasting several weeks, or a recent lasting change in bowel habits
  • Severe, persistent bloating
  • Difficulty swallowing, or a feeling that food gets "stuck"
  • Blood in the stool or anal bleeding, even a small amount
  • Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
  • Anemia (iron deficiency) found on a blood test
  • Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes) or abnormal liver tests
  • A family history of colorectal cancer or polyps: screening may be needed even without symptoms

Warning signs: seek urgent care

Some symptoms require immediate medical attention:

  • vomiting blood, or black, tar-like stools
  • sudden, very severe abdominal pain
  • fever together with abdominal pain or jaundice
  • vomiting that does not stop

In these situations, call the practice's emergency number, +212 6 61 38 03 13, or go to the nearest emergency department.

See a specialist even without symptoms: screening

Gastroenterologists also work in prevention. Colonoscopy screens for colorectal cancer and removes polyps before they can turn into cancer: it is generally offered from around age 50, or earlier if there is a family history, according to your doctor's advice. Screening for hepatitis B and C only requires a blood test.

What happens at the first consultation?

The doctor asks about your symptoms, medical history and medication, then examines you. Bring your blood tests, prescriptions and previous reports. Depending on the case, a blood test, an abdominal ultrasound performed at the practice, or an endoscopy may be prescribed.
